2018 Bear Creek Trash Bash

October 23, 2018 – Hannibal, MO – We are excited to announce this year, even with high creek levels, 78 volunteers from the community came together and collected 6,400 pounds of trash, and an additional 128 tires during our Fall Stream Cleanup event on Monday October 8th, 2018.

Annually each fall, HBPW employee volunteers team up for a litter pickup along Bear Creek and its banks along Sodalis Nature Preserve. Thanks to a partnership with General Mills and a local homeschool group, this year we were able to expand our efforts and add two additional locations: Bear Creek from General Mills to Orchard Avenue, and the unnamed Bear Creek tributary that flows though Huckleberry Park.

Many thanks go out to our community partners, who truly helped make the day a success. In addition to providing 25 employee volunteers, General Mills donated gloves for each of the volunteers, and Nature Valley granola bars while we worked. Continental Cement generously donated funds to help with event expenses, and Mark Twain Dinette, provided root beer to all the participants during lunch.

Jay Ritter, environmental manager with General Mills, stated “General Mills appreciates the opportunity to partner with the HBPW and work as a team in helping clean up along Bear Creek.  It is great to see people work together for a great cause like this and hope we can continue to build on this partnership in the future.”

We all share responsibility in keeping our community’s streets and waterways clean. If you have witnessed illegal dumping, or other act that may be in violation, you can  report it by calling the HBPW’s stormwater department at 573-221-8050, or anonymously report the incident online at https://www.hannibalbpw.org/stormwater-department/.
